i was talking with a coworker today about the iraq war.
she is furious about bush's invasion and occupation of another sovereign nation, and much more so over what she sees as the murders of the civilians involved.. with the same set of facts available to both of us, i found our dissimilar reactions to it interesting.
i am amused by it, and she's outraged.. we discussed why that might be the case.

I wondered after I posted if you might take that last part the wrong way. I wasn't trying to say you are being selfish for taking an observer position. Being selfish is the position I'm taking at the moment. I should have been more clear.
I think what I'm trying to say is that right now I'm at the "I don't care to observe because I'm all worn out" point. If that makes any sense.

On the whole, I see her position as a more responsible -- if futile -- one. She pointed out that if everyone felt as I do, no reform would ever occur. She's entirely right, of course. I'm not sure I can predict what would happen if everyone felt as she does.
I would counter her by saying that if everyone felt like you do, there wouldn't be these wars that she is so upset about either.
I'm kind of like you I guess. I just can't get that worked up about stuff so that I want to get involved. I just don't see how it would make a difference if I did. I feel like we have gotten to the point that the individual really can't affect change. Our government just has so much power (vs. the people they govern) that the scales have tipped too far and will never come back. If you don't have money (and I mean lots of it) or are already connected somehow, how do you make the government change?
Frankly, I don't care that much anymore. The borg drained me so much that I need...no stike that...I want to be selfish...at least for a while.

the story behind this happening is this.
i was talking to a guy i know very well, and i noticed he had a masonic emblem {the compass and square} on his ring.
My dad was a mason until his end. He was also in Eastern Star as is my mother.
I don't know how many meetings they have a month, but I do know that I spent a lot of time with the baby sitters as I grew up. I missed my parents a great deal. I'm sure a lot of it was E.S., not just the Masons
My parents may have enjoyed their time spent in those organizations, but more often than not, they seemed tired to me. My father could not in any way have only gone to two meetings a month and made the kind of impression that he did on me. He simply wasn't there for his family.
One of the goals of the Masons is to improve the lives of the membership. To make them better, wiser, more spiritual men. Or so I understand.
Before joining the Masons, I would ask myself if the time away from my family where I could interact with them is worth the trade-off of going to meetings for "self-improvement" (or is it really about just "hanging out with the boys"). If the meetings are twice a month, then maybe it isn't a problem. How do we feel about the number of meetings a week that the wt has? I wouldn't want to go back to that.
here's what's going on in our pitiful world right now: little drummer boy's truck needs a major (meaning expensive) repair on it asap; our lawn mower suddenly quit working; our air conditioner also quit working.
currently, it's 8:40 p.m. and it's 82 degrees and humid outside.
all we have is a little window ac which isn't cutting it (being that it is currently 83 degrees inside our house.

many times i have been slammed and get furious with the results.
there are a few posters including some long time members and possible trolls that enrage me.
I used to post more often and more personal thoughts when I first joined the board which was when I had justed DA'd. I gradually began pulling back in my posting style and quit putting myself out there to be stomped on. Now I pretty much, but not always, just make nonsense useless posts to be silly and ABSOLUTELY start NO threads. While I do post once in a while anymore, the only exception that gets me to post almost every time I see it is when somebody wants computer help.
